The Career Pathways program launches meaningful careers for deserving individuals by providing them with customized career training, placement assistance, and ongoing coaching. The program currently has two paths: BankWork$, which prepares participants for careers in the retail banking industry; and CareerWork$ Medical, which focuses on careers in the healthcare industry.
Developed by the Biller Family Foundation in 2006 in partnership with Jewish Vocational Services of Los Angeles (JVS-LA), BankWork$ prepares young adults from low-income and minority communities for careers in banking. With a time-tested platform, carefully designed curriculum, and dedicated trainers, BankWork$ is more than a job training program. It is a verified solution to the complex challenges facing underemployed communities. Equally, it is a solution for our partner financial institutions seeking qualified candidates for positions in retail banking. The program currently operates in Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco, Phoenix, Houston, Denver, Chicago, Atlanta, Philadelphia, and Portland, OR. As part of a five-year, $4-million national expansion in partnership with Bank of America, U.S. Bank, and Wells Fargo, the program will launch in four to six additional cities by 2019. See the BankWork$ website for more information.
CareerWork$ Medical replicates aspects of the BankWork$ career development program that are applicable, and modifies the model to meet specific healthcare industry requirements. CareerWork$ Medical prepares adults from low-income, communities of color who have a high school diploma or GED for careers in the healthcare industry. Our program partners offer professional opportunities that pay above a living wage, and include benefits and growth potential. CareerWork$ Medical program participants receive intensive training and ongoing career support; this ensures they are better prepared for entry-level positions in the healthcare industry than candidates from the general marketplace.
The CareerWork$ Medical program will:
- ensure that students understand what is required to work in the healthcare industry
- prepare students to become exceptional applicants for entry-level position in healthcare
- nurture graduates through ongoing coaching and mentoring in the field
- provide networking opportunities for graduates with area healthcare providers interested in hiring program graduates
On November 3, 2017, the program’s pilot class graduated and participated in a hiring event. We anticipate additional classes in Seattle to begin before year end, with more classes planned for 2018. Please see our flyer for more information. Details about our non-profit instructional partner, the YWCA Seattle/King/Snohomish, can be found on their website.
