Matthew Gonzales, M.D., FAAHPM, is a fellowship-trained, board-certified palliative medicine physician and serves as Associate Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for the Institute for Human Caring at Providence. In this role, he advances innovation, quality, and compassionate care for people living with serious illness across the health system.

He earned his undergraduate degree from Stanford University. In his first professional role, he worked as a software engineer, contributing to the development of a publicly available database that supports clinicians in tailoring HIV treatment. He attended the Keck School of Medicine of USC, then completed his internal medicine residency and palliative medicine fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Following his training, he joined the UCSF faculty.

Dr. Gonzales has been with the Institute for Human Caring since 2015, first serving as Chief Medical Information Officer and now as Chief Medical Officer.

In 2017, he was named a Cambia Health Foundation Sojourns Scholar in recognition of his leadership in advancing palliative care. He is a frequent national speaker on palliative care innovation, clinical transformation, and the evolving role of AI in healthcare, and serves on several national advisory boards focused on improving serious illness care.
