SEATTLE – For the first time, the Biller Family Foundation has awarded concurrent grants to theatre organizations in both Los Angeles County and Washington state. Five productions received grants that totaled $90,000: “Bars and Measures” at The Theatre @ Boston Court, “Hooded or Being Black for Dummies” at Theatre Battery, “Man of La Mancha” at A Noise Within, “Seedfolks” at Seattle Children’s Theatre, and “Wedding Band” at Intiman Theatre.
“We are thrilled to see theatres of all sizes tackling productions which deeply engage their audiences around pertinent and sometimes provocative topics,” said Sheri Biller, Foundation President. “We received many competitive applications, making for a challenging selection process. The strong audience outreach plans of the awardees made them stand out.”
“This first cycle marks an important step for the Foundation, as we have combined our efforts in our two funding regions to create one comprehensive theatre funding program,” added Colleen Oliver, Executive Director. “Partnering with organizations in both areas will allow us to learn from their efforts and continue to broaden the impact of socially relevant theatre.”
Launched in 2015, the Foundation’s theatre enrichment program supports specific productions that grapple with social issues and engage new audiences, with preference given to musical theatre. The Foundation will be announcing a second grant cycle on August 30, 2016.
